Christchurch, New Zealand, which celebrated 60 years of diplomatic relations with Korea, hosted the biggest Korean cultural festival in three years after COVID-19.
In this event, not only our Korean compatriots, but also the stage decorated by New Zealand locals, attracted more attention.
Reporter Lee Jun-seop visited the festival site.

This is the site of the ‘Korea Day’ festival held in Christchurch.

Traditional Korean games, such as neolttwigi and tuho, which are not easily accessible in New Zealand, also attracted the attention of local citizens.

Korea and New Zealand are celebrating 60 years of diplomatic relations this year.
A commemorative photo exhibition was also held at the festival to look back on the 60 years of exchange between the two countries.
In particular, Korean War veterans and their families were deeply moved when looking around the photo exhibit.

Compatriots vowed to live as proud members of the local society with Korean pride throughout the festival, which resumed after a long time.

[박종안 / 뉴질랜드 크라이스트처치 : 아무래도 한국 문화와 한국 사람들과 한국 음식과 이 모든 것들이 더더욱 뉴질랜드 사람들과 같이 나눌 수 있고 또한 이해심과 서로 연결되는 계기가 더더욱 많아지는 것 같아요. 다음 세대 아이들도 더더욱 연결될 수 있게, 장벽 없이 연결될 수 있는 게 보기 좋았던 것 같아요.]
Reflecting on the meaning of 60 years of diplomatic relations, Christchurch’s ‘Korea Day’ festival, which has been together for the first time in three years since the COVID-19 crisis.
Compatriots are looking forward to holding a bigger event that connects the Korean community with the local community at this time next year.
