The White House strongly condemned Russia’s efforts to hold a referendum to justify seizing in occupied Ukraine as an act of undermining Ukraine’s sovereignty.
National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said at a White House briefing that Russia appears to be pursuing a “fraudulent referendum” that directly violates Ukraine’s sovereignty in occupied territories and elsewhere in Ukraine.
He also criticized the referendum as an affront to the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity, which are the foundation of the international system and the core of the United Nations Charter.
He also said that Russia likely rigged the referendum to annex Ukrainian territory, making it clear that the United States will never concede Russia’s claims to Ukrainian territory.
