They found that presidents of private universities in financial crisis due to a decline in the school-age population receive an average of 160 million won in annual salary. The highest paid was the president of Kyungdong University in Yangju, Gyeonggi Province, who earned 430 million won.

According to the “Annual Salary Status of National 4-Year Private Universities and Junior College Presidents in 2021” received by the Ministry of Education from Min-seok Ahn of the Education Committee of the National Assembly on the 4th, the average annual salary of the presidents of the National Assembly. 143 private 4-year colleges were found to have earned 160 million.

The highest salary was the president of Kyungdong University in Yangju-si, Gyeonggi-do (430 million won). Baekseok University (420 million won), Pohang University (370 million won), Hallym University (340 million won), Chodang University (340 million won), and Eulji University (320 million won) followed in that order. The annual salaries of the presidents of Yonsei University and Korea University, which were not disclosed last year, were won 180 million won and 260 million won, respectively. Among the four-year private universities, two schools paid the president’s annual salary of 400 million or more, 4 earned 300 million, and 17 earned 200 million. There were 15 places with less than 100 million won. The rest of the universities had less than 100 million to 200 million won.

They also found that the average salary of presidents of 120 colleges and universities was 160 million won, the same as the four-year program. There was 1 place with more than 400 million won, 5 with 300 million won, and 25 with 200 million won. The highest salary at a junior college was 420 million earned at Baekseok Culture University. It was followed by Sungwoon University (370 million won), Nonghyup University (310 million won), Daegu Health University (300 million won), Yeongjin Junior College (300 million won) and Daekyung University (300 million won). Failing university presidents also received billions of dollars in salaries. The average annual salary of the presidents of 22 private four-year colleges and junior colleges that submitted data among universities designated as universities with limited financial support by the Ministry of Education due to poor performance over the past five years was earned 110 million.

Representative Ahn said, “Salary information needs to be disclosed so that members of private universities can empathize and judge the president’s salary and role.”
