After the oil spill off the coast of Taean, the government spent a large budget of 76 billion won to build an extremely large ship ‘Endam’ that can sail in any weather.

However, as a result of the coverage, it was revealed that the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries even held the launch ceremony while hiding the fact that the ‘Endam”s important equipment was not working properly and therefore could not be clean properly.

Last winter in December 2007.

A strip of crude oil covered the coast of Taean, South Chungcheong Province, in black.

At that time, about 10,000 tons of crude oil spilled from the Herbei Spirit.

However, as the storm warning continued to take effect, the initial control work was delayed, and the damage increased accordingly.

Accordingly, the government has come to the conclusion that there is a need for a large sea brigade that can sail even in rough weather.

This was the birth of the large scale 5,000 tonne water defense vessel ‘Endam’, which was moored in 31 months after construction began in November 2019.

As an ambitious result of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, which spent 76 billion won on a budget, on July 20, a spectacular inauguration ceremony was held in Yeosu, Jeollanam-do.

“In 2022, Korea’s first large-scale 5,000-ton multi-purpose disaster management ship, Endam, will begin a historic departure as an all-weather maritime disaster response vessel that protects the sea of ​​people.”

However, as a result of the investigation, it was confirmed that the Endham had a fatal problem.

The point is that the boom, which is essential equipment for the ship, is so bad that it cannot be repaired.

Of course, the boom should float above the sea, but the Endham boom sinks to the bottom of the sea.

If the boom does not act as a device to prevent the spread of spilled oil in the first place, proper containment cannot be maintained.

“The ability to install an oil fence to prevent the spread of pollution, especially in bad weather, to respond quickly to large-scale pollution incidents.”

In this regard, the Korea Oceanic and Environment Corporation discovered a defect in the boom during a test run at the end of May, and acknowledged the problem, saying that the manufacturer was even repairing it, but normal operation was deemed impossible.

It is clear that the large-scale control ship, which spent 76 billion won on a huge budget, was not functioning properly, in addition to being hidden and even launching a service.

The Korea Maritime Environment Corporation acknowledged the issue of the boom, but clarified that it was not a problem with the ship itself, but the launch ceremony.

He added that a new boom will be installed later this year.

However, in the case of Endam, various large and small problems such as some of the paint peeling off as well as the boom have been revealed, and repair work is being carried out separately.
