[전국]”Vertical drop when turning round and round”… Possible helicopter tail wing abnormality

CCTV captured the helicopter crashing in Yangyang, Gangwon-do, spinning around and falling almost vertically at the time of the crash.

Experts are weighing the possibility that the tail wing did not work properly due to external shocks or aircraft defects.

The crash of the helicopter at the time of the crash was captured on CCTV installed by Yangyang-gun for forest fire monitoring.

The Air Rail Accident Investigation Committee, which analyzed the CCTV footage, revealed that the helicopter fell almost vertically while turning around 5 times to the right in flight.

Experts analyze that the spinning of the helicopter is a phenomenon that occurs when the tail wing does not work properly.

It is not easy to determine the distance between the crash site and the CCTV installation point, but it was estimated that the height of the plane just before the crash was between 150 and 200 m.

Experts said it was a low altitude considering that the altitude is normally 700 to 800 meters when flying in a line.

Amidst this, some, including the bereaved family, are suspicious of aircraft defects.

However, the helicopter operator refuted that he changed various parts on time and passed all the inspections of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport more than 10 times a year.

The investigative committee, which is investigating the cause of the accident, looked at the condition of fuel and documents related to flying in the helicopter and also investigated the helicopter rental contract at Sokcho City Hall.

[항공철도 사고조사위원회 관계자 : 적절하게 임차가 된 건지, 규정에 따라 비행했는지 그런 계약 관계 부분을 살펴보려고요.]

The Accident Investigation Committee plans to move the body of the crashed helicopter to the analysis room at Gimpo Airport on the 1st of next month for a detailed analysis.
