Adults and children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder face nearly a 50% increase in overall gastrointestinal symptoms compared to people without the condition, according to a major systematic review and meta-analysis published on Sept. 10, 2026, in the Journal of Attention Disorders. Researchers at the University of Warwick analyzed data from more than 1.9 million individuals across 23 studies, uncovering a striking link between neurodevelopmental traits and chronic digestive distress.

While overall gastrointestinal symptoms spiked by nearly 50%, specific digestive disorders showed even starker increases among individuals with ADHD.
According to the published data, patients faced nearly double the odds of constipation, a 58% increase in irritable bowel syndrome, and more than four times the odds of encopresis, which involves the loss of bowel control.

Potential Drivers and the Gut-Brain Axis
Global prevalence estimates suggest that roughly 5% of children and 3% to 4% of adults live with ADHD, while reported diagnoses have climbed sharply over the past 40 years. Although autism spectrum disorder has long been linked to digestive complications through the gut-brain axis, the extent of gastrointestinal issues in ADHD populations remained largely unclear until now.
Researchers outlined several potential explanations for the association, noting that ADHD-related traits like impulsivity and irregular eating patterns might contribute directly to digestive trouble. Furthermore, common medications prescribed for ADHD are known to trigger gastrointestinal side effects such as constipation. Scientific literature also points toward emerging evidence connecting ADHD to distinct differences in gut bacteria, which can influence the digestive tract via the vagus nerveāa primary communication pathway between the gut and the brain.
Clinical Implications and Next Steps
The study authors stressed that the meta-analysis demonstrates an association rather than definitive proof that ADHD directly causes gut problems. They called for further research to disentangle biological factors from the secondary effects of pharmacological treatments.
In the meantime, the researchers recommend that clinicians treating patients with ADHD remain alert to digestive complaints and actively screen for them during routine consultations. Patients experiencing more complex or debilitating symptoms may benefit from targeted referrals to a dietitian or gastroenterologist.
We can’t yet say ADHD causes these gut problems, or exactly what is driving the link, but the pattern is striking enough to warrant attention. Healthcare providers treating individuals with ADHD should perhaps think about inquiring about digestive issues, especially when those troubles might impact overall well-being.
