EDMONTON – Alberta registered 37 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, bringing the total number of active cases to 509 across the province.
Hospitalizations fell sharply from 38 to 27 on Friday, but critical care admissions remained at eight, according to Alberta’s COVID-19 data website.
No new deaths were reported on Friday.
Edmonton still has the most active infections with 223, Calgary second with 178.
To date, Alberta has recorded 7,888 cases, 7,225 recoveries and 154 deaths.
Outbreak in hospital
Officials at the Misericorida Community Hospital in Edmonton are still responding to COVID-19 outbreaks in two units.
On Friday, the hospital had nine patients who tested positive for the virus, an increase of three cases since Thursday. Seven staff members also tested positive, a two-fold increase from Thursday.
On Thursday, a hospital patient also died from the virus.
Hospital officials said the epidemic protocols have been implemented and that only urgent emergency and oncology surgeries are underway.
All the patients in the affected units are tested, as well as the staff members who worked there were present in the units, even if they showed no symptoms.
Visitors to affected units are limited.
