US police are investigating the death of an 86-year-old woman suffering from dementia after finding her in a freezer at a nursing home on Tuesday.
Sofiya Perel was reported missing by staff at the Maria Joseph Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Trotwood, Ohio, where she lived. After looking for her for over two hours, they called for assistance around 1am Tuesday.
WHIO media revealed that 911 received a call from the center saying: “The alarm did not go off. We don’t know how it got out.”
Police search teams and a helicopter searched the area until 4am before finding his body in a freezer.
The cause of his death and who found it is still unclear.
County medical examiner Dr. Kent Harshbarger said it will take at least eight weeks to perform the necessary tests to determine the cause of his death.
Dementia is a syndrome that often causes forgetfulness and behavioral changes that reduce a person’s ability to perform daily activities. About 50 million people around the world suffer from this disease that normally affects older people.
