The special bill for the Moonlight Railway connecting Gwangju and Daegu was approved, after much difficulty, by the Transportation Bill Subcommittee of the National Assembly’s Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee.

The legislative subcommittee of the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee of the National Assembly met on the morning of the 21st and decided to amend the special law for the construction of the Moonlight high-speed railway, proposed by MP Yoon Jae-ok of the People Power Party .

The Ministry of Strategy and Finance has proposed a “fast-track investigation” that would only shorten the investigation period instead of including the provision on exemption from the preliminary feasibility study (investigation), which is the core of the special law, but the ruling and opposition parties led to the exemption from the preliminary feasibility study.

However, information about double tracking and the removal of the preliminary tax exemption for development in surrounding areas was omitted.

Since the special law has passed in subcommittee, it is expected to be presented and reviewed during the general meeting of the land, infrastructure and transport commission which will be held this morning.

If it is approved today in the plenary session by the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Commission, passing through the plenary session of the Legislation and Justice Commission on the 27th and presented at the plenary session on the 28th, it will be possible to implement it within the year as requested by the cities of Gwangju and Daegu.

Dalbit High-Speed Railway is a high-speed railway connecting Daegu and Gwangju. It is named after the first letters of “Dalgubeol” and “Bitgoeul”, the pure Korean names of Daegu and Gwangju. It is expected to be completed in 2030 and has a total length of 198.8 km, starting from Gwangju Songjeong Station and going from Gwangju Station to Gwangju Station. It is a large-scale national project spanning 6 cities, provinces and 10 cities, counties and districts across Jeonnam (Damyang) ~ Jeonbuk (Sunchang, Namwon, Jangsu) ~ Gyeongnam (Hamyang, Geochang, Hapcheon) ~ Gyeongbuk (Goryeong) to Seodaegu station. .

Additionally, the cities of Gwangju and Daegu have pursued high-speed railways, but have decided to build them as regular railways due to concerns about excessive investment costs. Accordingly, before the meeting of the subcommittee on the bill, a recommendation was made to the standing committee to change the name of the “Moonbit High-Speed Railway” to “Gwangju-Daegu Railway” and to exclude the word “high-speed” .

Once this railway opens, the travel time from Gwangju to Daegu will be significantly shortened to one hour.
