As we are increasingly called upon – or required by law – to practice social isolation, golf courses and driving ranges can be an outdoor escape for thousands of people looking to breathe a little more. fresh air and stay active.

However, some golf courses are required to close by law, while others choose to close in response to a dramatic business slowdown or to promote social distancing.

For golfers who are wondering if the golf courses are open (if you are wondering if the golf courses can remain open in the UK, we will also take care of you), we have some information and we count on the courses which remain open.

Are the golf courses open? A state by state guide

As more and more states publish their own executive measures to limit travel and promote social distancing, there has been confusion about each state’s policy. We follow the state.

Courts take various measures to prevent human interaction during this period, including prohibiting the rental of golf carts (or having more than one person in a golf cart), forcing sticks to stay in the cups (or by pulling the cups lightly off the ground to avoid touching the flag), closing bars and restaurants, closing full clubs and accepting digital payment only. The courses also require players to stay 6 feet apart from each other throughout the round.

In states where public gatherings are limited – in most cases 10 or less, but in some cases 25 or less – golf courses may very well be open.

Alabama: Governor Kay Ivey has issued a home stay order that allows golf courses to remain open, provided that social distance is respected and that proper protection practices are followed.

Alaska: It is not golf season.

Arizona: Governor Tony Ducey said golf courses are “essential businesses” that can remain open at this time, even through his stay at home order in effect until April 30.

California: The state of California requested an on-site shelter order that required the closure of all non-essential businesses. Golf courses are now closed across the state, although some laggards appear to remain.

Colorado: Governor Polis issued an on-site shelter order that forces non-essential businesses to close and citizens to stay at home, except for “critical activities”. However, golf courses are allowed to remain open at this time, and only about 70 courses in the state have closed. Local governments, including at the county and city levels, can choose tougher ordinances or close their owned and operated courts. Denver has closed all six of its municipal golf courses March 18. Colorado Springs is also closing its courses.

Connecticut: Governor Ned Lamont issued a closure order for all non-essential businesses which apparently forced the closure of the golf courses. However, the governor has reconsidered, and golf courses can remain open provided they practice proper security and social distancing techniques. Public golf courses in Fairfield, Connecticut will be closed from March 23.

Delaware: Delaware has issued its own home stay order, but golf courses are allowed to remain open. Golfers can play on the courses provided they are open, that the facility takes the necessary precautions and that golfers practice social distancing.

Florida: Governor Ron DeSantis has issued a statewide home stay order that allows golf courses to remain open. Several counties and municipalities, including Miami-Dade County, Broward County, and Palm Beach County, have issued on-site shelter orders to close golf courses. The Orange County and Orlando courts can now remain open.

Georgia: Governor Brian Kemp issued an on-site shelter order for “high risk” groups, which did not limit golf course openings. However, Atlanta, Savannah and Cobb County have made tougher orders. Golf courses are open in Atlanta.

Hawaii: Hawaii Governor David Ige issued a shelter order on site. All travelers to Hawaii are also required to self-quarantine for 14 days upon arrival, effective March 26. Residents can self-quarantine at home, and visitors can self-quarantine at their accommodation. however, based on his order for all Hawaiians, which starts on March 25, the golf courses are closing.

Idaho: Idaho has just issued an on-site shelter order, but we are awaiting more information. Blaine County, however, has issued shelter orders in place. The golf courses have remained open, although the season is early.

Illinois: Illinois has an order to stay home until April 7. Initially, it looked like golf courses could remain open to provide exercise for players looking to play the game while practicing social distancing, but they must now close.

Indiana: The governor has issued an executive decree restricting movement and closing non-essential businesses. However, golf courses are allowed to remain open.

Iowa: The government has not issued an on-site shelter order yet, and the golf courses remain widely open at this point.

Kansas: Despite government orders regarding movement restrictions, school closings and the promotion of social isolation, golf courses are allowed to remain open.

Kentucky: Governor Andy Beshear has issued a decree closing non-vital businesses, but golf courses are allowed to remain open and are considered exempt from the order.

Louisiana: Louisiana has issued a safer home order, but golf courses, including municipal courts in New Orleans, may remain open.

Maine: Golf courses are generally open, although the golf season has only just begun in Maine.

Maryland: In Maryland, Governor Larry Hogan issued similar restrictions, but did not reach the level of an on-site shelter order. The Maryland golf courses will close at 5:00 p.m. March 23.

Massachusetts: Massachusetts Governor Charlie Bakert closed all non-essential businesses at noon on March 24. Golf courses are not considered essential and should close.

Michigan: In Michigan, Governor Gretchen Whitmer has made an order for a three-week shelter that will begin on March 24 and close 650 state golf courses, under the direction of the governor’s office.

Minnesota: Governor Tim Walz has issued a stay-at-home order to limit travel and shut down non-essential businesses. Country clubs are listed as a non-core activity and are expected to close. However, public course owners are looking for clarity.

Mississippi: The governor sees no point in issuing an on-site shelter order or more stringent restrictions, so the golf courses remain open.

Missouri:Governor Parson has issued a stay at home order that allows golf courses to remain open, provided that social distance is respected and that proper protection practices are followed.

Montana: Governor Steve Bullock has not issued a statewide order yet and the golf courses have remained open.

Nebraska: Governor Ricketts Resisted Statewide Shelter Orders. The golf courses appear to remain open at this time.

Nevada: In Nevada, most non-essential businesses are closed, but the governor said golf courses remain open to promote exercise.

New Hampshire: Golf courses are to be closed as part of Governor Chris Sununu’s house stay order.

New Jersey: In New Jersey, which was effectively blocked with a 24-hour curfew, golf was seen as a non-core business and the golf courses were mostly closed by order.

New Mexico: Governor Michelle Grisham issued an on-site shelter order on March 23. However, the governor’s order limits gatherings of more than five people and does not define golf courses as essential businesses. Golf courses are closing.

New York: Golf courses have been closed statewide, but a new order has changed that. Golf courses can remain open as long as they take precautions and impose social distancing.

North Carolina: Governor Cooper’s house arrest order allows golf courses, including those of Pinehurst, to continue operating for the time being.

North Dakota: There has been no significant order for residents of North Dakota to stay indoors, although it is not really the golf season there.

Ohio: Ohio Governor Mike DeWine issued a statewide shelter order until April 6. However, people are allowed to leave their homes for exercise, but this no longer includes golf courses. They must close.

Oklahoma: Governor Kevin Stitt resisted calls for a statewide on-site shelter order, but made orders on March 25, leaving golf courses generally able to remain open.

Oregon: Oregon Governor Kate Brown has issued a home stay order, but golf courses are allowed to remain open to players, provided the courses and players adopt appropriate social distancing practices.

Pennsylvania: The state of Pennsylvania has closed all businesses that are not essential to the rescue operation, which means that all golf courses are closed until further notice. However, course owners and associations have asked Governor Wolf for the right to reopen to provide an outlet for the Pennsylvanians.

Rhode Island: While there may be a statewide order, Governor Raimondo has ordered “all recreational and entertainment facilities and all close contact businesses – gymnasiums, fitness centers, hair salons, nail salons – must close by March 23. Golf courses do not appear to be affected by the order.

Caroline from the south: Even with Governor McMaster’s order to close non-essential businesses, golf courses remain open throughout the state, including for residents of Myrtle Beach and surrounding areas.

South Dakota: Golf courses remain open throughout the state.

Tennessee: Golf courses remain open throughout the state.

Texas: The statewide order of Governor Abbott authorizes the opening of the courts. Local governments can issue more stringent orders. Tarrant County has ordered residents to take shelter there. the Austin, Texas, has closed all of its municipal golf courses. Dallas County, Texas has issued an on-site shelter order that still allows people to leave their homes for exercise while distancing themselves from it. The city of Dallas has closed its six municipal golf courses.

Utah: Golf courses remain open throughout the state, provided distance and social security measures are taken.

Vermont: Although a statewide on-site shelter order is expected sooner rather than later, golf courses appear to be operating in much of the state when possible.

Virginia: Virginia golf courses may remain open even though Governor Ralph Northam has issued a statewide home stay order.

Washington: Governor Jay Inslee has prohibited residents from leaving their homes, except for essential reasons, but golf courses are no longer allowed to remain open.

Wisconsin: Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers has issued directives that a safer house order (more or less, a shelter in place) requires golf courses to be closed until April 24.

West Virginia: West Virginia Governor Jim Justice, who also owns the Greenbrier complex in the state, has made a home order from 8 p.m. March 24. Residents can still go out for exercise provided they maintain an appropriate distance. This will allow the golf courses to remain open.

Wyoming: There are no statewide orders at this time and the golf courses are open.

Other governments and properties
