Sunderland’s hopes for automatic promotion took another blow when they lost to the Bristol Rovers.

Phil Parkinson made two big changes, giving Josh Scowen and Antoine Semenyo their full debut in place of George Dobson and Lynden Gooch.

The odds were however in the first half, neither side being really threatening.

That changed when a low ball through the box after a sharp turn on the right wing left Denver Hume dead and Clarke-Harris at the back post muscled Luke O’Nien to smash the house to six yards.

Kyle Lafferty and Alim Ozturk were both booked Sunderland looked shaken.

It was to be Lafferty’s last action when he was replaced by Charlie Wyke at the break.

But things got worse in Game 2 when the Rovers received a penalty.

Power loaded the ball and blocked a center in the box with a raised arm, Clarke-Harris scoring on the spot.

Here’s how James Hunter rated Sunderland’s players.

JON McLAUGHLIN 6

We could not fault the goals and made a good stop to refuse a hat trick to Clarke-Harris

JORDAN WILLIS 5

Started OK but got sloppy – which pretty much summed up Sunderland night

ALIM OZTURK 4

Too much misunderstanding between him and Willis in a jagged defensive display

TOM FLANAGAN 4

He looked shaky everywhere, but he was not the only one

LUKE O’NIEN 4

Shot too easily by Clarke-Harris for the goal, chained at the back and offered nothing in the future

JOSH SCOWEN 5

His first departure for the club – not a game he will want to remember

MAX POWER 4

Failed to capture play in midfield and gave handball penalty

DENVER HUME 4

On the side because of its offensive qualities but did not show any tonight

CHRIS MAGUIRE 5

Aside from a late shot directly at the goalkeeper, he barely had a goal sniff

KYLE LAFFERTY 5

Did half time after booking, to avoid the likely prospect of a red card

ANTOINE SEMENYO 5

Bright in the first semester, anonymous in the second

SUBS

CHARLIE WYKE 5

For Lafferty 46 minutes. Getting comfortable but not like scoring

LYNDEN GOOCH 5

For Ozturk 71 minutes. Can’t turn the tide

WILL GRIGG 6

For Scowen 87 minutes. Entered the game too late to have a significant impact

NOT USED: Burge, C McLaughlin, Dobson, Lynch
