‘Can’t stand the noise’; A 72-year-old woman was arrested for turning off her roommate’s ventilator in hospital

An elderly woman who switched off a patient’s ventilator in a German hospital’s intensive care unit has been arrested. A 72-year-old woman, who was nearby, switched off the ventilator used by another patient twice, claiming that she was hearing an unbearable noise from the ventilator which was causing her trouble. The incident happened late on Thursday at the hospital on the southwest side of the City of Manheim. The police have charged the woman with attempted murder. The hospital authorities themselves filed a complaint against them.

Another patient, a 79-year-old woman, was in the intensive care unit together with the accused old woman. Their life was maintained with the help of a ventilator. The lawyers told the court that the accused elderly woman switched off the ventilator twice, bypassing the strict instructions of the hospital authorities. The hospital staff had warned them that turning off the ventilator would endanger the life of the patient who was with the company. But ignoring all this, the 72-year-old woman switched off the ventilator saying that the noise of the machine was unpleasant.

At the same time, the hospital authorities managed to save the life of the second patient who was in critical condition by detecting this incident in time. The doctors said that they have overcome the danger and that their health condition is satisfactory but that they will remain on a ventilator. The 72-year-old woman, who was produced in court on Wednesday, was later transferred to prison. The police are investigating whether they came to the hospital with the intention of committing murder. Their previous history is also checked.

The events relating to the complaint took place on the evening of 29 November. The accused old woman complained that she could not sleep because of the noise she heard from the ventilator. A case of attempted murder has been registered on the complaint of the hospital management. Ventilators are used to artificially supply oxygen to critically ill patients who are unable to breathe. The old woman who had switched off the ventilator at 8 pm was first alerted. Even after this, ignoring the warning, they switched off the ventilator at 9 pm. The hospital authorities have not released the names of the patients.
