The final episode of VICE’s Dark Side of the Ring documentary series aired this evening, again covering Chris Benoit’s story and its effects on the wrestling world. In the documentary, Chris Jericho talked about Benoit and Eddie Guerrero and said that the case surrounding Benoit had almost destroyed the wrestling business as a whole.
According to Jericho, Guerrero’s heritage is acclaimed, while for Benoit, it’s almost taboo to never raise him. Speaking about it, Jericho noted how Benoit doing what he did almost destroyed everything he ever loved, leaving everyone who knew him wondering why he did it.
“One’s legacy is acclaimed [Eddie] and one is buried so you almost can’t say his name. If you had told Chris that when you die, your work will be erased from existence forever, it would have broken his heart because of something he said once. “Critics are critics, but if you have the respect of your peers, then nothing else matters.” So to find out that he would have lost respect not only for his friends but for his family, I don’t think he ever wanted that.
“It almost destroyed the whole business – and that’s another thing – what Chris almost destroyed the only thing he ever liked, from a professional point of view. The only thing he ever liked, professional wrestling, Chris Benoit almost destroyed. It would also have torn him apart. So that brings us to “why did he do it?” And I don’t think anyone can ever answer this question. “
