Colin Kaepernick is making titles again, and again it’s not because he signed with an NFL team.
With racial tensions all over the world, Kaepernick is working with Ava DuVernay to bring a series based on his life on Netflix. The show, Colin in black and white will focus on Kaepernick’s teens and inform viewers about what was needed to take him to where he is today.
Kaepernick’s rise to prominence
Kaepernick made his name in Nevada, where he was one of the best college quarterbacks in football. While not the best in the 2011 NFL Draft, he was selected in the second round after only a handful of other players.
Intended to be Alex Smith’s backup, Kaepernick spent most of his season as a beginner watching from the sidelines while attempting only five passes in three games. The following season, however, everything changed.
Kaepernick remained on the bench for several weeks until Smith suffered an injury that pushed him into the starting lineup. There, he stormed the country. Kaepernick had adequate arm and foot speed invisible in his position since Michael Vick.
As a result, the teams were not ready for his presence and he dismantled all the defenses he had to face. The 49ers made it to the Super Bowl that year, but ran short on the Baltimore Ravens.
With Smith in good health, the Niners decided to give Kaepernick the keys to the franchise. After staggering the NFL world the previous year, Kaepernick continued to keep up with the 49ers to a record 12-4 the following year before the team fell to rival Seattle Seahawks.
From there, it has been downhill. The team was at .500 in 2014 and, by 2015, they were almost at the bottom of the NFL ranking. That year, however, Kaepernick started making titles of different types.
Colin Kaepernick becomes an activist

Earlier in the season, people began to notice that while other players took the field for the national anthem, Kaepernick fell behind and sat on the bench. At this point, the 49ers were a bad football team, but Kaepernick became a bigger story than he was when he led them to the Super Bowl. People complained of her protest and called it disrespectful of the troops.
Over the next two years, Kaepernick became a hero and villain, depending on who was asked. Eventually he changed his style of protest by taking a knee at the request of an ex marine, but it wasn’t enough for those asking for his head.
After a 1-10 season with the 49ers in 2016, Kaepernick was out of work and remains there to this day. Fortunately, this gave him time to focus on his activism.
Kaepernick’s latest feat
Kaepernick has remained on the front page since his last NFL game thanks to his work as an activist. From donations to the less privileged to a historic deal with Nike despite the absence of the NFL contract, his voice as an activist has never been stronger.
Netflix’s deal is just another level of his activist career. It never started to be controversial. Instead, he decided to inform people of a perspective they may not always see, according to Complex.
“Too often we see race and Black stories represented through a white lens,” said the former quarterback. “We try to give a new perspective to the different realities that black people face. Let’s explore the racial conflicts that I faced as a black man adopted in a white community during my high school years. It is an honor to bring these stories to life in collaboration with Ava to show them to the world “.
Kaepernick will narrate the series, while Duvernay will help guide the creative side of the project. Kaepernick is at the point where everything he does in sports is secondary to what he does off the pitch, and when his show is previewed on Netflix, perhaps more people will understand where the controversial former NFL player is from.
