Iran’s supreme leader on Friday called Israel a “cancerous tumor” that “we will certainly remove and destroy,” during an annual speech in support of the Palestinians in which he renewed his threats against the Islamic Republic’s main enemy in the Middle East. .

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s words commemorated a lackluster Quds Day in Iran, which typically includes government-sponsored protests in the capital Tehran and elsewhere in the country, as well as in allied nations. Al-Quds is the Arabic name for Jerusalem.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Iran asked protesters to stay at their homes.

Jameini spoke to the nation in a 30-minute speech broadcast on state television, an unusual intervention since this act is usually led by other officials. The ayatollah repeatedly referred to Israel as a “cancer” or “tumor” and criticized the United States and the West for equipping it with “various types of military and non-military tools, including nuclear weapons.”

“The Zionist regime is a lethal cancer that grows to the detriment of this region,” Khamenei said. “Without a doubt, we will remove and destroy it.”

Under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, an ally of the United States, the nation had relations with Israel. But after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini ordered the celebration of the first Quds Day on the last Friday of the holy fasting month of Islam, Ramadan, to criticize Israel.

Today, Iran and Israel remain enemies and Israel is believed to be behind the airstrikes against Iranian forces present in Syria. Iran, for its part, supports the Lebanese insurgent group, Hezbollah.

During his speech, Khamenei also compared Israel to the coronavirus, adding that his views against the country were not anti-Semitic.
