NEW DELHI: Congress held protests in several cities across the country on Monday against rising fuel prices and demanded an immediate cancellation of the increase.
President of the Congress Sonia gandhi attacked the Center for increasing the price of fuel 22 times since the lock-up and accused him of extorting people.
She accused the government of making money at the expense of the people, saying it was her duty to help them in times of crisis, not to make profits with their hard-earned money.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also called on the government to stop taking advantage of fuel and roll back recent increases.
In a video, Rahul Gandhi said: “The effect of rising prices for diesel and gasoline is twofold. One that you pay directly and the other because of rising prices for consumer products , including essential items. ”
Sachin Pilot leads demonstration in Rajasthan
Rajasthan Congress President Sachin Pilot protested the Center over “unprecedented” gasoline and diesel prices and said he had hammered at people during economic hardship imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking to the protesters, Pilot said: “Due to the coronavirus crisis, demand for fuel has dropped worldwide. Despite the full fuel supply, the government has overwhelmed citizens by continually raising fuel prices for the past 20 days. ”
Such a steep hike has not been made in 70 years, he said, adding that it was “unprecedented”.
The pilot said, “The poor and middle class have been severely affected by the recent increases. No other country has seen this situation. All countries are helping their people during the coronavirus crisis. The Center has hammered when the country faces an economic downturn. No government has struck its people so hard before. ”
He said that gasoline and diesel prices directly affect ordinary people but that the Center has not formulated any policies to deal with the economic downturn and that they have passed on the burden to the masses.
“No government can ignore people’s voices. The rise in prices for gasoline and diesel will have to be reversed,” he said.
Maharashtra Congress organizes demonstrations
In Maharashtra, several ministers of Congress, including Balasaheb Thorat, Ashok Chavan and Nitin Raut, held a demonstration at the party office in Mumbai.
“The prices of gasoline and diesel have been raised by the Center in the past few days. Prices should be cut because people are already affected by the foreclosure,” said Thorat, president of Congress of Maharashtra and Minister of State finances.
Former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan led a demonstration in Sangli with Minister of State Vishwajit Kadam.
In addition, Minister of State Satej Patil held a demonstration against the rising fuel prices in Kolhapur.
Cycling rally against rising fuel in Bengaluru
Challenging social distancing and wearing masks, hundreds of Karnataka congressional leaders and executives organized a bicycle rally in the city against the sharp rise in gasoline and diesel prices by the central government.

Gujarat Congress Leader, 50 workers arrested
Gujarat Congress president Amit Chavda and nearly 50 other party workers were arrested on Monday in Ahmedabad when they attempted to rally against the ruling BJP in the center over rising fuel prices.
The opposition party also organized similar protests in the districts of Rajkot, Vadodara and Surat, Gujarat, and demanded the cancellation of the hike.
In Ahmedabad, Chavda and 50 other congressional workers, including MP Gyasuddin Shaikh, were arrested near the Sardar Baug region while trying to rally against rising gas and diesel prices.
Delhi Congress Leader and workers detained by police
Delhi congressional leaders staged a city-wide protest on Monday against rising fuel prices, raising slogans against the central government led by the BJP and the dispensation of the PAA in the nation’s capital.
Delhi Congressman Anil Kumar and party workers were later arrested by police in a gas pump near Parmanand hospital.
Kumar said police detained him and party officials as they attempted to visit Raj Niwas, who is the official residence of Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, to protest the price hike. gasoline and diesel.
Haryana Congress Hosts State-Wide Demonstration Against Rising Fuel Prices
The Haryana unit of Congress held statewide protests on Monday against rising fuel prices, with party leaders saying it should cascade down on people who are already struggling. because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Protests have taken place across the state, including in Karnal, Rohtak, Yamunanagar, Faridabad, Sirsa and other locations.
Haryana Congress President Kumari Selja led the protest in Karnal, which is the home district of Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.
She said that while international crude oil prices are at their lowest level, the Center, instead of passing benefits on to people by lowering prices, is constantly raising fuel prices.
Selja said that when Congress-led UPA was in power, relief was given to people even though international oil prices soared while the Modi government raised prices for gasoline and diesel, weighing down on the people and farmers already facing difficulties due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
