The captain of Rotunda Fergal Malone also confirmed that some 20 staff members are now infected with coronavirus.
But Professor Malone said he wanted to reassure women, hoping that all babies and mothers “recover well”.
It is not surprising that we have already had up to 10 Covid-19 patients positive here for pregnancy and childbirth care.
“To date, there have been no proven cases of Covid-19 transmission directly from mother to baby during pregnancy or childbirth.
“The cases we know of young babies, newborns, probably having Covid-19 then spread after birth.
“To our knowledge, there is no transmission from the placenta to the baby and patients can and should be reassured about this.
“We have fewer than 20 out of a cohort of 1,000 employees who tested positive – all of them were acquired by the community.
“We are not aware of any infected staff at the hospital.
“So far, all women and babies have been doing well and are recovering well.”
Professor Malone told Ireland AM on Virgin Media One that “there are clear guidelines and protocols on how to provide exemplary care to patients, whether or not they are infected with Covid-19”.
And said the main goal is to keep mothers, babies and staff safe and healthy and to minimize the risk of transmission.
