It is no coincidence that the “Star Wars” day takes place on May 4th. Fans know that the date in English sounds like the beginning of what is probably the most famous film quotation: “May the force be with you”. On this occasion, here are a few interesting facts about the film series:
The sound of the laser swords
The noise for the laser swords only came about by chance. While filming the first film, a sound designer with a microphone and headphones passed a television, causing interference: the buzzing sound and noise of film projectors in stand-by mode were then used for the film sequences with the lightsabers. Only later, from the prequel trilogy, were synthetic sounds used for this.
The films made George Lucas a billionaire
Instead of a fee for the first film, the director and inventor of “Star Wars”, George Lucas, was granted the rights to continue the series and merchandise. Since “Star Wars” is considered the most commercially successful film series of all time, this clever move has brought him an estimated several billion dollars.
The mysterious Yoda
Even those who have never actually seen the Star Wars films know Yoda, the small, green and very powerful Jedi. Although he is one of the most famous characters – nothing is revealed in all of the films about his origin or species. By the way, it should first be played by a monkey with a mask and walking stick, but then you decided on a doll.
Jabba is full of life
Jabba the Hutte, an alien gangster that looks a bit like an oversized snail, was played by seven people. Three people were in the doll and moved their arms, jaws, head, tongue and tail. Two other people steered their eyes away from Jabba. Another person was responsible for the doll’s lung movement, and the seventh person’s job was to blow smoke through a hose. This is how Jabba came to life through teamwork. With a value of around $ 500,000, it is said to be the most expensive doll in the world.
The secret: «I am your father»
After “May the Force be with you”, this line is probably the second best-known film quote: “No, I’m your father.” In this scene, Darth Vader admits to his son Luke that they are related. A completely different sentence was written by George Lucas in the scripts: “Obi-Wan killed your father!” So the famous words remained secret until shortly before this sequence was shot – the actors allegedly only learned about it shortly before.
A lot of creativity was demonstrated not only in the script, but also in the film props. The handles of the laser swords were, for example, simply holders for camera flash lights. A potato was even faded in as an asteroid. The so-called communicator by Jedi master Qui-Gon Jinn is actually an everyday item that has been somewhat redesigned and colored: it is a women’s razor from the Gillette brand.
Windus purple lightsaber
Supposedly, Samuel L. Jackson only wanted to be in the movies if his laser sword had a special color and would look different from the other swords. Mace Windu, whose role he embodied, is said to have been given a purple lightsaber.
