Marouf Youssef, the midfielder of the Arab contractors loaned from Zamalek, revealed that he was just around the corner from returning to the white squad last January.
But now Maarouf is active with the contractors and participated with the team in 16 games, during which he scored a goal and made two and contributed to his second place in the league table behind Al Ahly and to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Egypt Cup.
FilGoal.com reached out to the 27-year-old Nigerian player through his agent Osama Farhat and we had this conversation.
On the reason for his departure from Zamalek, he said: “I was committed to staying, but I gave space and freedom to the club in appreciation of their choice and in the end I did not continue.”
He continued, “It was my right to rescind the contract and get my late dues, but I did not do that out of respect for the club president Mortada Mansour and for the supervisor of the ball Amir Mortada.”
Maarouf revealed that he was close to returning to Zamalek three months ago. “Murtada Mansour talked to me and told me to return to the team last January.”
“But I think there was a choice between me and Kabongo Kasongo and he was chosen to return, but this did not affect my respect for Zamalek.”
He continued, “I have been in Zamalek for nearly six years and until my return to him in the future I will thank and appreciate him, so my relationship with the club will remain very great.”
And on the end of his contract with Zamalek, he explained, “At the end of next season.”
When asked whether he intends to renew his contract with Zamalek, he said: “I will not disclose anything except in a timely manner.”
Regarding the experience of playing in the contractors, he said: “I feel very comfortable with Imad Al-Nahhas, the coach of the team. I love working with him very much. He reminds me of Ehab Jalal, Helmi Tulan, Muhammad Helmi and Talat Youssef.”
“They are all very dependent on the physical side, and I like it,” he said.
“I live a special period in my career. Last season, I got the best player in the Iraqi league and the best professional and crowned the title with the police club.”
He added, “If I did not return to Zamalek, I prefer staying in the contractors because, as I said, I feel comfortable with the coach and management and I benefited a lot here technically.”
Regarding the contractors’ position in the competition to qualify for the African championships next season, he said, “We are working with all force to achieve this goal.”
Marouf Youssef concluded his speech, “My goal is to help the team to qualify so that I can participate with them if I do not return to Zamalek, which I consider my home, but this does not prevent me from enjoying my experience in the contractors.”
Maarouf participated with Zamalek in 133 games, during which he scored seven goals and made 14 others.
Maarouf crowned with Zamalek the Egyptian Premier League and Super Cup three times.
