Dhe former French head of government François Fillon to jail for two years: the Parisian criminal court sentenced the 66-year-old politician on Monday in an affair about the bogus employment of his wife and children. Fillon received a total of five years in prison and three years were suspended. In addition, he should pay a fine of 375,000 euros, as reported by the French daily “Le Monde”. His wife Penelope was sentenced to three years on probation. She should pay the same fine.
Fillon appeared in court with his wife on Monday afternoon, as seen on television pictures. Both wore mouth-to-nose covers. Fillon, head of government under President Nicolas Sarkozy, had worked for years with his wife Penelope. She worked as a parliamentary assistant for her husband and his successor Marc Joulaud in the National Assembly. According to the court, this was a pseudo-employment. Joulaud has now also been given a suspended sentence.
The judge said Penelope Fillon’s compensation was disproportionate to her activities, Franceinfo reported. They mainly sent mail. The former prime minister had always rejected the allegations. Fillon’s lawyers have recently asked to be reinstated because they want to clarify doubts about the independence of the judiciary in this case.
The prosecutor’s office had demanded two years in prison and three years probation for the Prime Minister of the then conservative President Nicolas Sarkozy. Fillon served as head of government from 2007 to 2012.
Fillon was temporarily in the lead in the 2017 election campaign against today’s President Emmanuel Macron. After allegations against him and his wife Penelope, the survey values plummeted.
