The American Commission on Religious Affairs has strongly criticized the action of the US State Department which excluded India from the list of countries facing challenges to religious freedom. The Chairman of the Commission, Nuri Turkel, said that there was no justification for the failure of the US State Department to recognize India or Nigeria as serious offenders of religious freedom. The United States Commission said it was very disappointed that the Secretary of State did not accept the Commission’s recommendations and failed to find cases of violations of religious freedom in both countries.

He also said that the Department of External Affairs had reported serious violations of religious freedom in India and Nigeria. According to the current situation, the United States has included 12 countries, including China, Pakistan and Myanmar, in the list of countries where religious freedom is challenged.
Other countries on the US State Department’s list include Myanmar, China, Cuba, Eritrea, Iran, Nicaragua, the Republic of Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan.

Anthony Blinken’s report also notes that serious violations of religious freedom occur in Algeria, the Central African Republic and Vietnam. Last month, the US Commission on Religious Affairs released a report saying that religious freedom and human rights in India face serious challenges. This is the fourth time the Commission has included India in the list. But three times before, the Ministry of External Affairs intervened and banned India.
