THE PELICANS HAVE A HARD DECISION TO TAKE AT THE CENTER

From the New Orleans Times-Picayune: The drop between the production offered by the Pelicans’ starting center and what the team’s reserves could give was steep enough to ski. This season, the Pelicans have gone 24-27 when he played Derrick Favors. When it wasn’t available, they ranged from 6-15.

New Orleans was arguably leaner in the middle than any other position, and early in the season Derrick Favors wasted time with knee and back injuries, and then while mourning his mother’s death. The Pelicans have had no favors in 10 of 13 consecutive games lost, a franchise record for futility.

The coach who shoots leaves the off-season for young bulls uncertain

The Chicago Bulls fired their manager, Jim Boylen, two weeks ago, leaving Executive Vice President Arturas Karnisovas with decisions to make with both his coaching staff and roster. From NBCSports.com:

“Firing him should have been obvious, especially once the Bulls have hired Arturas Karnisovas as team president. Let Karnisovas hire his coach.

“The Chicago list is lacking, though not necessarily hopeless.

“Zach LaVine is closer to the All-Star star – not an ideal centerpiece – but the 25-year-old could continue to improve. Young Coby White, Lauri Markkanen, and Wendell Carter Jr. have had too many lows to feel good about their future, even if tall enough to at least be intrigued. Otto Porter veterans, Thaddeus Young and Tomas Satoransky were disappointed but have a record of success.

A new coach will have pieces to work with.

Karnisovas still has a lot of work to do to update those pieces. “
