Germany sues government over soaring corruption – On 26 September, the BBC reported that Germans have filed a lawsuit against the government after air pollution is likely to rise to dangerous levels. The state is considered to have violated the right to access clean air and failed to protect the good health of the people.

Germany is one of the countries where air pollution exceeds the safe threshold of the World Health Organization (WHO), which is one of the causes of premature deaths of more than 7 million people worldwide every year. This was the first time that the Germans joined together to sue the state over the problem.

This comes after the Attorney General of the Court of Justice of the European Union said in May that ordinary citizens could sue the government for the above. In the past, the state had to pay compensation to the victim if he was found guilty.

A total of seven Germans have filed lawsuits, including parents representing their children. People, including people with allergies, say their health is being threatened and politicians are failing to protect people’s quality of life.

The plaintiffs, who come from mega cities such as Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt and Düsseldorf, four of the seven largest cities in Germany, say they suffer Breathing in polluted air, around four to five times the WHO baseline.

“About 150,000 cars pass in front of my house every day, and when I get away I take my family out of the city,” Battaglia said.

The report said that air pollution in Germany is still within statutory safety standards, but prosecutors say that the law needs to be amended to bring the standards to meet new scientific information.

The new body of information has led the WHO to improve the standard for dust pollution PM2.5 in the new air in 2021 must not be more than 5 micrograms per cubic meter of air (10 year average) and nitrogen dioxide no more than 10 micrograms per year. 1 cubic meter of air (5 years average)

The revised recommendations from the World Health Organization are consistent with the results of the latest study. It has been found that breathing car exhaust can lead to lung cancer, with one in 10 people suffering from lung cancer caused by air pollution.
