Georges St-Pierre was finally added to the UFC Hall of Fame, and his reaction to this news is probably the purest thing you will see today.
UFC made the announcement Saturday night at UFC 249: the Canadian star would be inducted in 2020 in the “Modern Wing”, where he shares a place with BJ Penn, Forrest Griffin, Urijah Faber, Ronda Rousey, Michael Bisping and Rashad Evans. According to the UFC, “ the modern era category includes athletes who became professional on or after November 17, 2000 (when the first UFC event under unified MMA rules took place), have a minimum age of 35 years or have been retired for a year or more.
While an induction ceremony should (hopefully) end later this year, for now you can watch Dana White call Georges and tell him the good news.
I guess it’s not a big surprise since we’re all under the same damn lock in North America, but St-Pierre was actually watching UFC 249 when Dana called him. So now we wonder … did White call Georges before the promotional video announcing his enthronement was broadcast or after? It looks like it would be the most UFC thing ever announced first, notify GSP later. Anyway, St-Pierre seems to be tickled with pink.
If you missed it last night, here is the aforementioned promotion for getting started with GSP. It’s a great little package that takes you back to George’s early career in the era when he carried Canadian MMA on his back.
Now all the UFC has to do is bring Frank Shamrock into the Pioneer wing and they won’t have too much glaring oversight.
