Berlin’s Senator for the Interior Andreas Geisel (54, SPD) tends not to make a mess. But on Friday it was ready. And how!
Then he came to the public with a wide chest and a rage of anger: the United States had “confiscated” 200,000 protective masks for the Berlin police in Thailand and had them diverted to the United States; Protective masks that were ordered from an American company in China – from his police. His verdict: “Wild West methods” and an “act of modern piracy”! The federal government must intervene!
Berlin’s governing mayor Michael Müller (55, SPD) followed suit, personally speaking to US President Donald Trump (73): His actions are “inhumane and unacceptable”.
The result: an international outcry and diplomatic involvement between Washington and Berlin. As it turned out later: The Berlin state government raised the serious allegations against the USA without being familiar with the facts – and had to row back shortly afterwards!
As of Friday, the state government said that the masks were ordered from a “US manufacturer”. The interior senator had to correct himself on Saturday: the order had been placed “with a German company for medical retailers”.
What seemed clear the day before – the US government as a mask thief – was suddenly completely unclear. Try “together with the Berlin police to clarify the details”. Means: The serious accusations had been made by Interior Senator Geisel and Mayor Müller without knowing the details.
▶ ︎ The fact is: The airport and the authorities in Bangkok, where, according to the hostage, the USA had the goods diverted, are not aware of a “confiscation” or confiscation, not even of the delivery. The White House also knows nothing of a delivery or confiscation, denying violently and clearly on Saturday.
The American global corporation 3M, from which the masks were allegedly ordered by the state of Berlin or its police in China according to the “Tagesspiegel”, knows nothing of such an order. “3M is not aware of an order for masks from China for the Berlin police,” said BILD upon request.
The interior senator, it is said on Twitter officially, “check the information about the supply chain together with the dealer”.
An examination that should have happened before the serious allegations against the US government.
