“Daddy’s Girls“Fans are not happy with Hulu after the streamer released an episode of the series to refer to blackface.
Hulu’s removal of the season 3 episode “Mixed Blessings” followed in the footsteps of other shows drawing similar content in light of the Black Lives Matter movement which occupies a central place in America and the world.
In the episode, Bea ArthurDorothy was introduced to her son’s fiancée, a particularly elderly black woman, The Hollywood Reporter Noted. Rue McClanahan’s Blanche and Betty WhiteRose put on mud masks when she first met the bride, played by Rosalind Cash.
“It’s mud on our faces,” said White in the episode. “We are not really black.”
It didn’t take fans long for Twitter to defend the series.
“First of all, they wore mud masks and not black faces”, one user said. “And secondly, in what world” stop killing us “.” Please delete the episodes of Golden Girls “? I haven’t seen that request on anyone’s protest board …”
The same user continued: “To be clear: I am not attacking Hulu. I would just hate that the seriousness of this moment and the movement are lost in symbolic (and sometimes silly) overcorrections. The impact on real life should be the measure of any change worthy of a public relations boost. “
“Yep, these companies and media platforms are trivializing the situation by sending the message that our demand for justice is as mean as removing episodes of the Golden Girls from a streaming platform. It is a calculated effort to minimize our message”, another wrote.
A third Twitter user wrote that blackface episodes from television should not be deleted, calling them “huge racist blind spots” in pop culture, noting that the removal of the “Golden Girls” episode was “crazy”.
Hulu officials did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment.
