India-Sri Lanka Test series starts on Friday: Ashwin on the cusp of breaking new ground

Mohali: With the India-Sri Lanka Test series set to start on Friday, a new record has been set for veteran spinner R Ashwin. Ashwin is looking forward to becoming the second highest wicket-taker in Test cricket. Currently, Ashwin has taken 430 wickets in 84 Tests at an average of 24.38.

With five more wickets to go, Ashwin could overtake former captain Kapil Dev. Kapil has taken 434 wickets in 131 Tests. Meanwhile, this will be Rohit Sharma’s first Test as India’s Test captain. Rohit was considered for the new captaincy after Virat Kohli vacated the captaincy after the tour of South Africa.

Currently, Rohit leads India in all three formats. India had dropped seniors Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara. Both have been in bad form for a long time. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli is set to become the 12th Indian to complete 100 Tests.
