BODY World Health or WHO some time ago has issued a release recommending the use of the drug dexamethasone for handling COVID-19, because it is considered effective and beneficial in severe cases of COVID-19. Although recommended by WHO, but in fact the drug is not an antidote to COVID-19 and is only a combination of drugs.

Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid class of drugs used to treat inflammation, allergic reactions, and autoimmune diseases. Although this drug is freely sold in pharmacies, the use of dexamethasone should not be arbitrary and must be in accordance with doctor’s instructions, because the side effects are not mild and can suppress the immune system that is actually needed by the body to fight germs. 19 Released at PubMed on June 19, 2020 written by Nafiseh Abdolahi et al with the title translated “The Efficacy of Various Methods of Giving Regiments including Dexamethasone, Intravenous Immunoglobulin and Interferon-Beta to Treat Critical COVID-19 Patients”. This research was conducted randomly (randomisation) so it is quite good as a basis for evidence of treatment. From the journal an increase in oxygen saturation (presentation of hemoglobin bound to oxygen in the arteries) increased to 90% which was previously below 90%. The duration to be hospitalized was reduced and the death rate from COVID-19 was reduced. Dexamethasone’s action is used to reduce inflammation (anti-inflammatory) and cytokine storms that can cause damage in the lungs. This damage makes the patient shortness of breath and experience complications, such as respiratory failure or ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome). Cytokine storms are caused by an increase in the immune response that is actually our immune system to fight infection. But if it is excessive for example in the case of COVID-19 infection it will cause damage to our body.Although dexamethasone is believed to help cure COVID-19 in patients with severe symptoms, further research is needed on the effectiveness and rules of administration in the treatment of Corona virus infections, for example regarding the dose and duration of administration of this drug. There is no single drug that has been proven effective for curing COVID-19, including dexamethasone. Likewise with vaccines to prevent Corona virus infection. However, researchers are still working to develop drugs and vaccines for this disease. So prevention is better than cure. So, so that we are not infected with the Corona virus that is epidemic, always implement preventive measures, such as washing hands with water and soap, wearing a mask when outside the home, doing physical distancing, and maintain endurance. **** The author is a General Practitioner at Kuala Pembuang District Hospital, Seruyan Regency, Central Kalimantan.
