Japan approves establishment of TSMC semiconductor factory…

The Japanese government has approved a plan for a semiconductor plant under construction in Kumamoto Prefecture by TSMC along with Japanese companies Sony and Denso, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun and Asahi Shimbun reported on the 18th.

According to the report, the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry decided to provide up to 476 billion yen (approximately 4.5 trillion won) to the TSMC Kumamoto plant as it made this decision the day before. Of the approximately 1.1 trillion yen (about 10.5 trillion won) invested in the construction of the factory, the Japanese government supports nearly half of it.

Construction of TSMC’s Kumamoto plant started in April this year, and shipment is scheduled for December 2024. The 10- to 20-nm semiconductors to be produced at this plant are used in a wide range of fields such as automobiles, industrial machinery, and home appliances. The Japanese government has been taking the lead in attracting TSMC plants to increase domestic production of semiconductors for economic and security reasons.

Nihon Keizai ordered, “Since the large amount of support is provided, it is essential to verify whether the domestic industry can enjoy the appropriate effect, and a meticulous (government) explanation is required.”
