Speaking to the BBC’s Newsnight program, the Lithuanian leader stated that while citizens feel constantly threatened by neighboring actions, the nation is fully prepared to fight back in the event of an invasion.

Airspace Violations and Drone Incursions
The preparedness measures follow heightened regional tensions and airspace violations involving military drones.
Just a week prior, NATO fighter pilots intercepted and shot down an unmanned aerial vehicle that entered Lithuanian airspace from the direction of Belarus, a key Russian ally and neighbor. Lithuanian Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas confirmed the trajectory of the incursion to Newshour.
Capital residents in Vilnius were previously forced to seek shelter in May after an airspace alert triggered temporary disruptions to flight and rail schedules. Similar drone incursions have affected neighboring Baltic members Estonia and Latvia, where NATO jets have scrambled multiple times to intercept stray Ukrainian drones linked by Ukrainian officials to Russian electronic warfare systems.
Article 5 and Collective Defense Guarantees
As a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization since 2004, Lithuania relies on the collective defense guarantees outlined in Article 5, which dictates that an attack against one member nation is treated as an attack against all allies.
UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting praised the recent interception, stating thanks to the swift and professional actions of Lithuanian and Italian forces, Nato once again demonstrated our readiness to protect our airspace.
