Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has hailed Pep Guardiola as “the best-dressed manager” – as he explained why he will always be a tracksuit manager.

Sharp-dressing Guardiola has become known for his dapper style while guiding Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City to trophies galore.

Klopp, unusually for a top-level manager in the modern game, is immediately recognizable by his trademark cap and tracksuit – a look he has stuck with throughout his time in charge of Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool.

And the Reds boss says his style is working for him, having led Liverpool in the last 11 months to the European Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, the Club World Cup and the brink of Premier League glory.

“I was a player and the next day I was the manager. In my locker room was the tracksuit of the guy who had the job two days before. It didn’t even fit me,” Klopp told The Guardian.

Jurgen Klopp is usually seen in his trademark tracksuit and cap, while Pep Guardiola often goes for the suit or smart casual look

“I was just focused on the game. I never thought about how I look.

“I know it’s not too cool because we are working in public, but then when I came to Borussia Dortmund I thought:‘ Maybe I have to change ‘.

“I went for a while wearing jeans and a shirt. But I just didn’t feel comfortable. But that doesn’t mean it’s bad for you.”

Klopp and Guardiola have enjoyed an intense in both the Bundesliga and the Premier League – but the Liverpool boss admits there is no contest when it comes to fashion sense.

“I think the best-dressed manager is Pep Guardiola,” he said. “Everything he wears looks exactly right for him. He doesn’t wear a suit, just casual stuff.

“Be yourself as a coach. If you want to look great, then wonderful. I’m just not made for this.

“It’s important you do what is right for you because whatever role model you have, you can never do the same things.”

Klopp admitted he is equally impressed by the style of Guardiola’s teams as the style of his clothing – but the Reds manager’s growing trophy haul is proof that when it comes to winning silverware, it doesn’t matter what the gaffer is wearing on the sidelines.

Wearing a tracksuit didn’t stop Klopp from lifting the European Cup last year

“I like when you see the soul or character of the coach in the team,” Klopp said.

“Guardiola again: you see a team and think:‘ Wow, that’s either Guardiola or somebody who worked with him. ’But you can never be exactly the same.

“Dressing is one part of our character. Wear what you want, but don’t make it the most important thing. In the end the game is what counts.
