Malaysia and Indonesia have agreed to ramp up preventive measures to tackle cross-border haze and safeguard regional air quality ahead of the upcoming National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations, according to an official statement released on August 24. Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup announced the joint commitment following a phone call with Indonesian Environment Minister Jumhur Hidayat.

El Niño Pressures and Shared Border Mitigation

With the El Niño phenomenon expected to intensify toward October 2026 amid the Southwest Monsoon, both nations have committed to early suppression strategies, according to the NRES minister. Arthur conveyed the Malaysian government’s appreciation to Indonesia for granting official airspace clearance for cloud seeding operations along their shared border. The National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) and the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) are preparing a timetable to synchronize these operations with the Indonesian Armed Forces Commander. Arthur also stated that Malaysia remains ready to assist in putting out fires if requested by Indonesia, subject to Cabinet approval and framed by ASEAN solidarity.

Operational Deployments and Domestic Air Quality

Malaysia acknowledged the expeditious forest and land fire mitigation strategies steered by Indonesian President Prabowo, which include the mobilization of an additional 1,500 Indonesian National Armed Forces personnel. Indonesia has also deployed high-capacity helicopters for water-bombing missions and executed weather modification operations. Domestically, NRES through the Department of Environment and MetMalaysia is maintaining rigorous surveillance of hotspot activity and ambient air quality. By 10:00 am today, ten areas across four states registered Air Pollutant Index (API) readings in the unhealthy range, with Serian, Sarawak, posting the highest figure near the threshold for very unhealthy air.

National Day Celebrations and Regional Diplomacy

The cross-border haze issue carries immediate logistical impacts for upcoming national events. Malaysia’s 69th National Day celebration is scheduled for August 31, at Dataran Putrajaya, while the Malaysia Day celebration is set for September 16, in Kuching, Sarawak. Government officials have weighed scaled-down or indoor alternatives for the festivities depending on air quality conditions. Furthermore, Malaysia and Brunei plan to raise the cross-border haze issue at ASEAN discussions to secure broader regional cooperation.
