Jakarta, Beritasatu.com – Currently there is a lot of information circulating and claims that Covid-19 can be treated with cheap medicines that have been used for a long time by the community. For example aspirin, steroids, and colchicine. However, a number of recently published studies on Covid-19 mention another fact.
Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia (FKUI), Prof. Ari Fahrial Syam said, in Covid-19 patients with moderate and severe conditions can occur cytokine storm syndrome (sitokin storm syndrome), which is an increase in the immune response that aggravates the disease.
This cytokine storm occurs because of an inflammatory reaction, which can cause complications of hypercoagulation (increased blood viscosity). So it’s not a direct virus that causes blood clots or clots (blood clot), but through the process of the cytokine storm syndrome.
This condition can be known to doctors from the examination of the coagulation system partial thromboplastin time (PTT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT). From this examination if there is coagulation, the doctor will give anticoagulants instead of antiplatelet or aspirin.
“Blood clot will clog the lung capillaries and blood vessels of internal organs. So once again the medicine is not aspirin but an anticoagulant to overcome this condition, “Ari said, Sunday (6/28/2020).
According to Ari, cytokine storm syndrome can indeed be overcome with anti-inflammatory drugs, such as steroids, as conveyed by the Oxford University research team whose information was distributed by the BBC some time ago. But research also shows steroids only reduce mortality in moderate and severe cases. This is not effective in mild or no patients support respiratory supplementation.
Then about the colchicine drug which is also claimed to cure Covid-19, Ari explained, this drug is used for rheumatic diseases due to gout (arthritis gout). Usually patients who experience arthritis attacks due to high uric acid are effectively given this drug.
The inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects of colchicine are the reason this drug can be given to Covid-19 patients even though research results are not yet available. This drug is not yet a therapy given for Covid-19 patients in Indonesia.
The question is, in some patients why the course of the disease is fast so that within a week death has occurred. In Covid-19 patients can occur happy hypoxia, where the patient looks fine but has a low oxygen level, can experience unconsciousness until death.
The patient does not feel shortness of breath even though the blood oxygen level has dropped. However, by examining the respiratory monitor will be detected if the patient’s breathing frequency has increased and the oximeter examination is increasingly clear there is a decrease in oxygen levels.
That’s why on a number of occasions when the patient is congested it is usually already in the second week of the course of the disease. Thus the recommendation to go to the hospital if you are short of breath is misleading information. Because the course of the disease is severe and the patient experiences oxygen deprivation for a long time.
So actually when there are symptoms of fever, cough, runny nose immediately to the doctor or hospital. When you feel tightness, it’s actually too late if this happens at home.
