Missing woman suffering from dementia found dead in Cedar City 1 year later

CEDAR CITY – A 71-year-old missing woman suffering from dementia was found dead Wednesday in Cedar City and authorities say there were no signs gambling was involved in her death.

Investigators identified the woman as Carol Stratton – who went missing nearly a year ago – based on preliminary information, including her clothing, physical descriptors and location.

Stratton passed away on October 26, 2019 and was last seen near 3700 W. 4000 North in Cedar City.

Last October, authorities and members of the public conducted multiple large searches over several days for the woman.

A worker on a ranch found the body in a mugwort field as it was being cleaned up with heavy equipment at around 2:00 PM on Wednesday, Iron County Sheriff officials said.

Her remains were found about 500 meters south of her family’s farm, where authorities said she originally left when she went missing.

The remains were sent to the Utah State Medical Examiner’s office to confirm identification. The cause of Stratton’s death was not immediately released.
