In total, 5280 people have died as a result of the virus in Sweden. By comparison, 249 lives have been lost in Norway.
Over the past week, WHO has announced that infection rates are rising in 11 countries in Europe. Sweden, Albania and Moldova are among these.
Sweden’s state epidemiologist, Anders Tegnell, believes that it will be a misinterpretation of data to compare Sweden’s situation with the remaining countries experiencing an increase in infection rates in Europe.
– We have an increasing number of infected people in Sweden, but that is because we are testing more than before. It is unfortunate that people confuse Sweden with countries that have had no problems whatsoever and are obviously at the beginning of their epidemic, ”Anders Tegnell told Swedish SVT.
Critical to Sweden’s strategy
Former state epidemiologist in Sweden, Annika Linde, has previously criticized Tegnell’s strategy of obtaining herd immunity. She said at the time that Sweden should have shut down society to prevent coronary infection such as Norway over most other countries.
Our neighboring country, unlike most others, has not closed schools, borders or the rest of society. Sitting at home has been limited to those who are ill or at risk.
According to figures from WHO, Europe accounts for two and a half million of the ten million cases of infection registered worldwide. Sweden has so far registered 65,137 cases of infection together.
