BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh speaker NP Prajapati Sunday refused to sign up if he would order a ground test in the Legislative Assembly on March 16 as directed by the governor Lalji Tandon to the chief minister Kamal Nath.
All eyes are on Prajapati, whose call for the ground test – allowing or refusing it on Monday the first day of the budget session – will affect the political situation in the Congress-led state.
“It will be known tomorrow,” Prajapti told reporters when asked about the order that prevails when ordering a ground test.
“I said yesterday that a decision that I will have to make, I do not take it pre-decided. This question is like taking a blind blow. I do not want to be part of it. I will read my ruling tomorrow”, a said the speaker.
The government led by Kamal Nath in Madhya Pradesh was pushed to the brink on Wednesday when 22 deputies resigned from the party, immediately after the top leader Jyotiraditya Scindia quit the party. He then joined the BJP.
The speaker has so far accepted the resignations of six of the 22 deputies, reducing the house’s effective membership to 222 and the new majority to 112. The BJP opposition has 107 deputies.
Earlier in the day, state public relations minister PC Sharma said that although the governor asked the government of Congress to request a vote of confidence after his (governor’s) address to the House on Monday , the speaker is authorized to decide the business of the House and he would take a call thereon.
However, BJP chief assembly whip Narottam Mishra said, “Congress has lost its majority. The governor says he was in the minority. I am not saying that … he was mentioned in the Governor’s letter to Chief Minister. ”
Sources say the BJP is ready to take a ground test on Monday while Congress is in favor of saving time in the hope of regaining some of the rebel lawmakers.
