Eight years ago, the Audi A3 hatchback was the first to try Volkswagen’s MQB modular platform, which subsequently, in one form or another, formed the basis of countless cars – from a tiny Audi A1 to a huge minivan Volkswagen Viloran. And now “a-third” survived a generation change later than their relatives: Volkswagen Golf eighth generation Skoda octavia and Seat leon already published and began to appear on European roads.
Save intrigue failed, although there was nothing special to hide, because the Audi A3 hatchback retained its image almost in its original form. It is easiest to distinguish the fourth generation hatchback from the outgoing model by new headlights with characteristic branches at the bottom and a slightly expanded radiator grille. Plastic bumper pads that mimic air ducts rush into the back.
In profile, the five-door is recognized unmistakably: except that the roof line has become a little more sloping, and the windows in the rear pillars have become a little smaller. Best the enemy of the good? By the way, there will no longer be a three-door version in the gamut (as will Golf and Leon). In length and width, the new Audi A3 Sportback added 3 cm (and grew to 4.34 and 1.82 m respectively), although the height and wheelbase (2637 mm) remained the same. The boot volume was increased from 340 to 380 liters, and with the seats folded in the second row, the owner will have 1200 liters (plus 20 liters compared to the hatchback of the previous generation).
The interior of the Audi A3 is unrecognizable. The retractable screen of the media system on the previous generation model was convenient in its own way, but now a new 10.1-inch display is inscribed in the front panel, slightly deployed to the driver and is already available in the basic configuration. The traditional instrument panel with analogue scales is also a thing of the past – from now on, all A3s are equipped with virtual tidy, and this is not the same unified display that is put on the Golf, Leon and Octavia, but a larger screen by 12.3 inches. A projection display is also proposed.
As for the engine range, at first it will consist of a 1.5 TFSI gasoline turbo engine (150 hp) and a 2.0 TDI turbodiesel in two versions (116 or 150 hp). You can choose from a six-speed “mechanics” and a seven-speed “robot” S tronic with two clutches. At first, all Audi A3s will be offered exclusively with front-wheel drive. Later, all-wheel drive option and hybrids will appear. As before, cars with motors less than 150 hp. instead of the rear mnogoryichazhka, a semi-independent suspension is laid.
European dealers have already begun accepting orders; in Germany, sales of Audi A3 hatchbacks will begin in May. Five-doors from the first series will be available in a special edition One edition, dedicated to the beginning of the release, which includes many options: such cars can be identified by gray matte inserts on the body, 18-inch alloy wheels with a special design and darkened matrix LED headlights. In the summer, the fourth-generation Audi A3 will enter other European markets, and then new hatchbacks will reach Russia.
