[30日 ロイター] – Damage to the Nord Stream undersea natural gas pipeline linking Russia and Europe is likely to become the single largest vent of climate-damaging methane on record, the United Nations said on Monday.

Recent analysis of satellite imagery by researchers at the International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) shows high levels of methane, a greenhouse gas that is far more powerful than carbon dioxide but has a shorter atmospheric lifetime. -a scale explosion was confirmed.

“This is very bad and probably the biggest explosion ever seen,” IMEO chief Manfredi Caltagirone told Reuters.

Researchers at GHGSat, which uses satellites to monitor methane emissions, said in a statement that one of the four compensations was leaking 22,920 kilograms per hour. That equates to burning around 630,000 pounds of coal per hour.
