MANILA, Philippines – Over 100 Filipinos and foreigners, including the famous KC Montero, were arrested on Sunday June 28 after being caught gathering at Skye Bar in the posh village of Salcedo in Makati City while the region is still in quarantine.

According to Makati city police, they received a tip from the partygoers in the area and launched a surprise inspection leading to the mass arrest.

One of the bar’s owners, Felix Maramba, was among those arrested, said the head of the Makati police investigation unit, Major Gideon Ines Jr.

The owner of the bar, who was arrested, invited them online for their reopening“, Added Ines

(The owner, the one who was arrested, invited these people online to attend the bar’s reopening.)

The rules they have broken: Metro Manila is under general quarantine of the community until the end of June.

Bars are not allowed to reopen and mass gatherings are prohibited. They may face complaints of violation of Bayanihan Law and the Law on Compulsory Reporting of Notifiable Diseases and Health Events of Public Health Concern.

Montero claimed that he and his wife were only there for a meal and that they did not know that the bars were not yet authorized to operate. (LILY: Limited restaurant-restaurant authorized in GCQ zones from June 15)

“Regardless whether he knows it or not (whether he knows it or not), they have always violated physical distance, “said Ines.

Why it matters: The arrests come after the Philippines eased locking restrictions after months of heightened community quarantine. Experts warned that people were complacent even when the virus continued to spread quickly.

The Philippines is at the forefront of the rise of new cases of coronavirus in the the entire Western Pacific region, according to data from the World Health Organization. From June 16 to 27, the number of COVID-19 cases in the Philippines jumped from 8,143, placing it ahead of 22 countries in the region.

On Monday, the country had a total of 35,455 cases of coronavirus, with 1,244 deaths and 9,686 cures. – Rappler.com
