A mother and grandfather who drowned in the pool in their New Jersey garden a week ago were trying to rescue an 8-year-old girl who had fallen, police said. Bharat Patel, 62, her daughter-in-law Nisha Patel, 33, and her 8-year-old daughter were found insensitive in the above-ground pool in the afternoon of June 22 by the police of Eastern Brunswick in response to a call to 911 from neighbors who heard screams.

Lt. Frank Sutter of East Brunswick said the girl fell into the pool and her grandfather and mother were trying to save her when they too started to drown, CBS New York reported.

Middlesex County prosecutors and police said that although the above-ground pool was generally shallow at 3 1/2 feet deep, part of the pool was 7 feet deep and “it does not appear that the victims knew how to swim “.

Real estate announcements show that the pool was already installed when the Patel family bought the house in April, NJ.com reported. Neighbors told CBS New York that the family had just moved into the house about a month ago.

“It’s painful. It’s painful,” said neighbor Yamini Patel at the station.

The county regional medical examiner determined the cause of death by drowning and determined the accidental death pattern for the three victims. Police and prosecutors said earlier electricity played no role in their death.
