Political suspension for Imran Khan again; Election Commission of Pakistan banned

Lahore: The Election Commission has declared Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan ineligible.

Imran Khan has been banned from being a member of the Parliament of Pakistan. The ban is said to be for five years.

The Election Commission unanimously decided to expel Imran Khan after he was found guilty of corruption.

The commission confirmed the claim that Imran Khan made money by privately selling the gifts he received during his tenure as Prime Minister.

At the same time, Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, which rejected the Election Commission’s decision, called its ranks to take to the streets in protest.

The commission’s decision was based on a complaint filed by the current ruling Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) (PMLN) leader against Imran Khan in August last year.

The complaint said that Imran Khan had received gifts from many foreign dignitaries and from the State Gift Store (Toshakhana) but had not disclosed such gifts and properties in the statement submitted before the Election Commission.

Meanwhile, a member of PTI’s legal team, Faisal Farid Chaudhary, told Al Jazeera that he is waiting for the detailed verdict and will appeal to the Islamabad High Court after that.

On April 10, the PMLN tabled a no-confidence motion against Imran Khan’s government in the Parliament of Pakistan. Imran Khan lost the post of Prime Minister after the government failed to prove a majority in the vote held on this.

PMLN leader and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s brother, Shehbaz Sharif, later assumed office as Prime Minister.
