Prabowo is weighing a severe escalation in state policy, considering whether to label catastrophic forest and land fires as “ecological terrorism” as toxic peatland smoke chokes the region.

Satellite Counts Track Surging Hotspots

The policy discussions unfold against a backdrop of mounting environmental crisis. Emergency crews are battling a relentless surge of hotspots fueled by an intensifying El Niño pattern and a prolonged dry season, forcing authorities to scramble water-bombing aircraft and detain dozens of suspects linked to illegal land clearing.

Satellite data from the Environment Ministry paints a stark picture of the devastation. South Sumatra currently anchors the crisis, recording 1,429 wildfire hotspots to lead the nation. West Kalimantan trails closely with 1,226 locations, while Central Kalimantan registers 811. Nationwide, the flames consumed nearly 940 square kilometers of land in July alone, a total that includes more than 20 square kilometers scorched within South Sumatra.

Corporate Seals and Law Enforcement Sweeps

Jakarta has moved aggressively to counter the destruction. The government has sealed 50 corporate properties across eight provinces over forest and land fires, according to ANTARA News. Law enforcement agencies have also arrested 72 individuals suspected of utilizing illegal fire for land clearance, while four separate corporate entities remain under active investigation.

To suppress the blazes from the air, emergency responders have deployed dozens of aircraft dedicated to cloud seeding and high-volume water bombing operations.

Palembang Gathers for Rain Prayers

On the ground, the thick smoke has reduced visibility so drastically that motorists must navigate daytime streets with their headlights switched on. Desperate for relief, communities in South Sumatra have merged civic firefighting efforts with spiritual interventions.

Roughly 3,000 residents converged on the courtyard of the governor’s office in Palembang to perform salat istisqa, the traditional Islamic prayer for rain.

“We have done everything we can and worked closely with all relevant parties,” South Sumatra Governor Herman Deru said. “As people of faith, we are also praying to God to send rain so that life can return to normal.”

Cross-Border Haze Renews Tensions

The heavy emissions have refused to stay inside national borders.
