Hasenhuettl said that Ings reaped the benefits of working on his fitness during the lockout due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuettl supported Danny Ings to overtake Jamie Vardy and win the gold shoe this season after the striker scored twice in Sunday’s 3-1 Premier League victory at Watford.

Ings slipped in front of two Watford defenders and curled up in a weak effort in the 16th minute, before adding another in the second half to bring his total to 18 goals, one behind the Vardy of Leicester City.

Hasenhuettl has said he will play 27-year-old Ings in his six remaining matches to help him finish as the league’s top scorer.

“I think anything is possible,” Hasenhuettl told reporters.

“We will play with him in the last six games and that means he will have six games to score … if he has a chance, you see how fantastic his finish is right now.”

Hasenhuettl said that Ings reaped the benefits of working on his fitness during the lockout due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“He looks fitter than ever,” said Hasenhuettl.

“He worked hard during the shutdown and that gives him fantastic physical options.”

Southampton, 13th in the standings with 40 points in 32 games, will face Manchester City at home on Sunday.
