South Korean President Moon Jae-in has ordered that the U.S. and South Korea respond “with close cooperation” in relation to North Korea’s ballistic missile launch, the Blue House said.

The Blue House said, “President Moon received a report on related trends from National Security Office Director Suh Hoon right after North Korea’s missile launch today afternoon.”

The government urgently convened the National Security Council and the NSC Standing Committee, presided over by Chief Security Officer Suh Hoon, and said, “We strongly condemn North Korea’s launch of a ballistic missile that is in violation of the UN Security Council resolutions and is contrary to the demands of the international community.” .

He also urged North Korea to “stop actions that pose a serious threat to the Korean Peninsula, the region, and the international community and return as soon as possible to the path of dialogue and diplomacy.”

“Ahead of the inauguration of the new government on May 10, the government will firmly respond to any threat based on strong military response capabilities and the ROK-U.S. alliance,” he said.

North Korea previously fired a ballistic missile into the East Sea from Sunan, Pyongyang around 12:03 noon today, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff explained that it was detected at a flight distance of about 470 km and an altitude of about 780 km.
