Has Carlos Tavares (61) suspected for a long time that the Geneva Motor Show would be canceled? The boss of the PSA group (Citroën, DS, Peugeot and Opel) would only have come to Geneva with the luxury brand DS the new sedan DS 9 to reveal.
That was an economic decision, explains Tavares. “A trade fair appearance is expensive.” And if a brand has nothing new to report, it is better to invest the money more profitably. With this analytical thinking, the Portuguese-born refurbished the largest car manufacturer in France. He also analyzes the cancellation of the salon analytically. It was a responsible step. But: «The costs incurred must now be shared fairly between the organizer and the exhibitors. Otherwise, not many will come to Geneva next year. »
For the PSA boss there was still reason to celebrate this week. The Peugeot 208 became the Car of chosen the year – the third Peugeot in six years. “This title is a praise for our employees and speaks for their passion.” The small car is based on a multi-energy platform and is therefore available with petrol, diesel or electric drive. “This enables us to respond better to customer needs,” explains Tavares. The diesel share of PSA sales has leveled off at 30 percent, while the electrical share is around six percent.
Is that enough to meet the strict CO2-To meet EU requirements (95 g / km)? “We already undercut the limit in January and February,” Tavares proudly reveals on the phone. Which makes PSA probably the cleanest car manufacturer after Tesla, the electric car manufacturer. Tavares is also pleased for his employees: “Even if they work for a car manufacturer, our employees should be able to look their children in the eye with a clear conscience.”
