With a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Portugal, Korea achieved the feat of advancing to the round of 16 at the World Cup for the first time in 12 years.
The soccer teams of Korea and Portugal Group H played the group stage of the Qatar 2022 World Cup at 0:00 am (Korea time) on the 3rd at the Education City Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar.
This is the third time that Korea have advanced to the round of 16 in 12 years since the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, and have reached the round of 16 or higher.
Korea gave the opening goal to Ricardo Orta (Braga) in the 5th minute of the first half, but in the 27th minute of the first half, Lee Kang-in’s (Mallorca) corner kick hit Cristiano Ronaldo and Kim Young-kwon (Ulsan) equal.
At the 46th minute of the second half, Son Heung-min (Tottenham) ran to the vicinity of the penalty box and created a counterattack opportunity, and Hwang Hee-chan (Wolverhampton), who received the pass, scored the winning goal.
The coach of the Korean national football team, Paulo Bento, received a red card for protesting against the referee during the game against Ghana, so he sat in the stands instead of the floor to watch the game. He was replaced by assistant coach Sergio Costa.
At the same time, Uruguay won 2-0 against Ghana and tied the score with Korea Republic, but Korea scored more goals and progressed to the round of 16 as the second place in Group H.
As Korea managed to advance to the round of 16 following Japan and Australia, the World Cup is an unprecedented sensation in Asia.
The largest number of member countries of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) have participated in this World Cup, and this is the first time that three member states have passed the group stage.
Korea will play the round of 16 against Brazil, the number one player in the FIFA rankings, at Stadium 974 in Doha at 4:00am on the 6th.
