Samsung is expected to launch two new foldable smartphones in the second half of the year, with an affordable foldable handset model due out next year, industry sources said on Sunday. Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy Fold 2 and 5G variant of the Galaxy Z Flip at an event in August, as well as its flagship phablet Galaxy Note 20, reported Yonhap news agency, citing industry sources. But its affordable foldable smartphone, probably called the Galaxy Fold Lite, is not expected to debut at the event, they said.
Rumor has it that the South Korean tech giant has released a version of its foldable smartphone that sells for almost half the price of an ordinary Galaxy Fold. Technical critics have predicted that the Galaxy Fold 2 will feature a 7.7-inch screen when unfolded, while also having a 6.23-inch cover screen, both larger than the 7.3-inch screens and 4.6 inches from its predecessor, respectively. Samsung should use ultra-thin glass (UTG) for the Galaxy Fold 2, as it did for the Galaxy Z Flip. However, many predicted that the second generation of the Galaxy Fold likely wouldn’t be wearing the S-Pen.
The 5G variant of the Galaxy Z Flip is not expected to have any major changes in the specifications of the first model, the sources said. The unveiling by Samsung of the new foldable smartphones will take place in a context of strong competition between Huawei and Microsoft. Chinese Huawei plans to release its Mate X2, while Microsoft plans to introduce the Surface Duo in the third quarter of the year.
