Determining the NFL team with the toughest schedule is an inexact science due to the unpredictable nature of a given season; the same goes for determining the team with the simplest schedule. The strength of the calendar ranking is affected by off-season events like the NFL free agency and the repechage, which change the projections for the 32 teams.

So, as always, the only way to objectively determine who has the toughest and easiest NFL schedules in 2020 is to take a look at their opponents’ records from the previous season.

During the 2020 NFL season, we will likely learn that the teams pinned with the toughest and easiest schedules did not actually have the toughest and easiest schedules. For example, the team with the simplest calendar in 2020 based on the percentage of victories of its opponents last season is a defending division champion. But this team’s division is expected to be stronger in 2020, which means its schedule will be more difficult than expected.

You will find below the details of the schedules of these teams, as well as a complete ranking of the 32 teams according to the strength of the 2020 calendar.

The most difficult schedule in the NFL in 2020

New England Patriots (.537 opponents win the percentage)

Home A way
Buffalo bills Buffalo bills
Miami Dolphins Miami Dolphins
New York Jets New York Jets
Arizona Cardinals Houston Texans
Baltimore crows Kansas City chefs
Denver Broncos Los Angeles Chargers
Las Vegas Raiders Los Angeles Rams
San Francisco 49ers Seattle Seahawks

Thanks to the humble Dolphins and the Medium Jets, the Patriots are driven by the 2019 records of their division opponents (44-52). But their opponents in rotation in 2020 are tough. (And the Dolphins and Jets are expected to improve in 2020.)

New England attracts Kansas City, Super Bowl champion, in addition to first-place opponents Baltimore and Houston. And like everyone else in AFC East, the Patriots must play against NFC West, one of if not the best division in football.

New England has seven games with teams that won 10 or more regular season games last year.

Baltimore Ravens (.438 opponents win the percentage)

Home A way
Cincinnati Bengals Cincinnati Bengals
Cleveland Browns Cleveland Browns
Pittsburgh Steelers Pittsburgh Steelers
Dallas Cowboys Houston Texans
Jacksonville Jaguars Indianapolis Colts
Kansas City chefs New England Patriots
New York Giants Philadelphia Eagles
Tennessee Titans Washington Redskins

Although the Ravens technically have the simplest calendar for 2020 in terms of their opponents’ winning percentage in 2019, it is likely that they will not actually have the simplest calendar for 2020.

For one thing, we expect their division opponents in Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Cincinnati to improve on the 32-64 mark they posted last season. Likewise, other teams on their calendar like the Giants, Eagles and Colts could end up with more wins this year. And yes, as the first team, Baltimore has yet to play in Kansas City.

That said, only three teams on the Ravens’ calendar won more than 10 regular season games last year.

2020 NFL calendar for the 32 teams

The opponents for each NFL team in 2020 were determined at the end of the 2019 regular season. The league’s programming formula ensures that all teams take turns fighting each other.

Each team plays …

  1. Home and away from three division opponents
  2. The four teams from another division within its conference on a three-year rotary cycle
  3. The four teams from a division of the other conference on a four-year rotary cycle
  4. Two intra-conference games based on the previous year’s rankings (these games pit a first-place team against first-place teams in both divisions of the same conference that the team should not play this season)

Here are the opponents of each team in 2020.
