Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says that “it doesn’t look like” the talented young Angel Gomes will stay in Man Utd.
The highly rated 19-year-old – who has been strongly linked to Chelsea – went through the Old Trafford Giants Academy and made his debut at 16 in May 2017, becoming the youngest player since Duncan Edwards at appear in the first team. .
But Gomes has only made 10 first-team appearances and contract talks have reached a roadblock, with Solskjaer now expecting Man Utd midfielder to leave after his contract expires on Tuesday.
Asked if the 19-year-old would stay at the club, the United boss said: “I have no news, nothing, so it doesn’t look like that.”
Gomes competed in the 2017 U17 World Cup triumph in England 11 days ago Solskjaer said he hoped the teenager had signed a new agreement, adding “I hope from what I understand, it’s not too far”.
Pushed to clarify if Gomes was leaving, Solskjaer added: “To be honest, I did not hear from them last night or this morning, so it seems that they did not manage to agree (an agreement) , so the answer is probably short and yes then. “
Although far from a regular on the first team, the departure of Gomes is a heavy blow for a club synonymous with the promotion of local talent.
Paul Pogba, Mason Greenwood and Scott McTominay are regulars on the youth team with Marcus Rashford.
Rashford is keen to make up for lost time after suffering a back injury in January, but has yet to score since restarting play in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.
“Sure, Marcus has been gone for a while, but I think he looks lively,” said Solskjaer before Premier League trip to Brighton on Tuesday.
“He came and looked again against Norwich, against Sheffield United, he missed a couple of times, but the goals he created, I think, are what we focus on.
“I think Marcus is on the verge of his best season at Man United, so for me I can’t wait for him to get more and more minutes. He will certainly score a goal soon. “
