— London stocks closed lower on Friday (Nov 19) as commodities and travel stocks tumbled on fears about a new round of lockdown measures in Europe to curb the spread of the virus. In addition, concerns about the prospect of raising interest rates in the UK following strong economic data releases have dragged the FTSE 100 down this week for the first time in four weeks.

The FTSE 100 London Stock Exchange closed at 7,223.57, down 32.39, or -0.45%.

— New York West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil (WTI) ended lower on Friday (Nov 19) as investors feared the number of coronavirus cases. The increase in Europe will slow the economic recovery and affect oil demand. The US and China may be draining oil from strategic reserves to keep oil prices down.

The WTI crude oil contract was delivered in December. It fell $2.91, or 3.7%, at $76.10 a barrel. And this week, it’s down 5.8%.

Brent crude oil contract (BRENT) for delivery in Jan. It fell $2.35, or 2.9 percent, at $78.89 a barrel. And this week, it’s down 4%.

— New York gold futures ended negative on Friday (Nov 19) at their lowest level in more than a week, falling in line with the sharp fall in oil prices. It was also pressured as the US dollar rose to its highest level in around 16 months.

The COMEX (Commodity Exchange) gold contract will be delivered in December. It was down $9.8, or 0.53%, at $1,851.6 an ounce. and fell around 0.9% this week.

Silver metal contract for delivery in December It was down 11.9 cents, or 0.48%, at $24.781 an ounce.

Platinum contract delivered in Jan. It was down $20.4, or 1.93%, at $1,036 an ounce.

Palladium contract delivered in December It fell $64.20, or 3 percent, at $2,073.20 an ounce.

— The US dollar strengthened against major currencies in trading at the New York Foreign Exchange on Friday (Nov 19), driven by increased demand for safe-haven currencies. Amid concerns about the spread of COVID-19

The dollar index, which measures the dollar’s movements against six major currencies in a basket of currencies, was up 0.52% to 96.0384 overnight.

The US dollar strengthened against the Swiss franc to 0.9286 from 0.9255 francs, and the US dollar strengthened against the Canadian dollar at 1.2660 Canadian dollars from 1.2607 Canadian dollars. But the dollar weakened against the yen at 113.95 yen from 114.22 yen.

The euro was lower against the dollar to $1.1289 from $1.1372, the pound fell to $1.3446 from $1.3499, and the Australian dollar was lower to $0.7235 from $0.7274.
